DIN 417 Slotted set screws and pins
DIN 417 is the slotted headless set screw with a long dog point — an unthreaded cylindrical nose projecting from the end of the screw. Instead of pressing or biting against a surface, the dog enters a drilled hole or milled slot in the shaft, so the two parts are located positively and cannot slide axially. That makes DIN 417 as much a locating pin as a clamp. What the Long Dog Point Does
The dog acts as a peg. Drop it into a cross-drilled hole and the screw becomes a keyless drive or a positive stop that carries load in shear as well as friction; run it into a longitudinal slot and the shaft can slide a set distance but never rotate or leave the slot. Because the nose is unthreaded and generously long, DIN 417 tolerates a little misalignment and still engages. Where you only need to lock rotation without a hole in the shaft, choose a cup point (DIN 438); buyers specifying to international documentation order the identical geometry as ISO 7435.
Why Brass
Brass DIN 417 is used where a non-magnetic, corrosion-free locating element is wanted — optical and instrument stages, light indexing mechanisms, electrical positioning, and assemblies mating with brass or aluminium where a plated steel dog might seize. CW614N turns a clean, concentric dog and a crisp slot. For heavily loaded drives on steel shafts, the same geometry is available in steel or stainless.
