DIN 553 Slotted set screws with cone point
DIN 553 is the slotted headless set screw that ends in a sharp cone. The pointed tip concentrates the tightening force onto a tiny area, so it either seats into a matching drilled dimple in the shaft or bites into a softer shaft directly. That gives DIN 553 the strongest resistance to rotation of the slotted set screws — the reason it is chosen for settings meant to stay put. Definite Metal manufactures DIN 553 in CW614N brass across M1.6 to M12, with a standard 90° cone (120° on the shortest screws). Part of our brass grub screws range.
What the Cone Point Does
The cone acts almost like a centre-punch: driven against a plain shaft it forms its own seat, and driven into a pre-drilled 90° dimple it locates precisely and resists both turning and sliding. Because the contact is a point, it does leave a mark — so cone point is for near-permanent positioning rather than frequent adjustment. If you need to re-position often, choose a flat point (DIN 551); for positive location in a hole, a long dog point (DIN 417) is used instead.
Why Brass
Brass DIN 553 suits electrical and instrument work where a positive, vibration-resistant lock is wanted without magnetic or corrosion problems: transformer and meter assemblies, terminal set-and-forget positioning, and non-magnetic instruments. CW614N takes a clean, concentric cone in high-speed turning. Where the cone must bite a hardened steel shaft, we can supply the same screw in steel or stainless.

Applications & Industries
DIN 553 brass cone-point set screws are used to lock shaft collars, gears and cams in a fixed position, to seat into drilled dimples for precise location, and in electrical and instrument assemblies where the setting must resist vibration and stay put.
Frequently Asked Questions
The standard cone is 90 degrees. On very short screws, where there is not enough length for a full 90 degree cone, a 120 degree cone is used instead.
Not necessarily. A cone point can bite directly into a softer shaft, but drilling a matching 90 degree dimple gives the most precise location and the highest resistance to turning and sliding.
Cone locates into a dimple and gives the sharpest, most positive seat for permanent positioning; cup point gives a broad locking bite on plain round bar without needing a dimple.
Yes — ISO 7434 is the equivalent international standard for the slotted cone-point set screw.
Yes, DIN 553 is produced down to M1.6 and smaller on request; typical MOQ is 500 pcs per size.
