Brass grub screw

Grub screws — also called set screws — are headless threaded fasteners driven fully into a tapped hole to locate or lock one part against another, most often a hub, collar, gear or pulley onto a shaft. Because they have no head, the whole fastener sits flush or below the surface. Definite Metal manufactures brass set screws across the common DIN and ISO standards, in slotted and hexagon-socket drives, with the four working points engineers choose between: flat, cone, cup and dog. Choosing the Point

The point does the work, so it decides the standard you order.

A flat point (DIN 551, DIN 913, DIN 427) presses squarely against the mating surface without digging in. It suits frequent adjustment and bears against pre-hardened shafts or soft inserts where you do not want to mar the surface.

A cone point (DIN 553) has a sharp included angle that seats into a matching drilled dimple or bites into a softer shaft, giving strong resistance to rotation for near-permanent settings.

A cup point (DIN 438 / ISO 7436) presents a circular rim that bites a small annular ring into the shaft. It is the general-purpose locking point for holding torque against solid round bar.

A dog point (DIN 417 / ISO 7435, long dog) has an unthreaded cylindrical nose that enters a hole or slot in the shaft, locating the two parts positively and resisting axial movement — useful as a stop or a keyless drive.

Choosing the Drive

Slotted set screws (DIN 417, 427, 438, 551, 553) are tightened with a flat-blade screwdriver and are economical and low-profile. Hexagon-socket set screws (DIN 913 and its cone/dog/cup siblings DIN 914/915/916) accept an Allen key, allow more torque and sit fully inside the hole, which is why they dominate machine-tool and drive-line assemblies. Why Brass for Set Screws

Brass grub screws are specified where corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity or non-magnetic behaviour matter more than maximum clamp load: terminal blocks and busbars, instrument and meter assemblies, marine and decorative fittings, and light shaft collars. CW614N machines cleanly to a sharp point or crisp slot and holds thread accuracy in high-volume turning. Where a hardened steel bite is required instead, we can quote the same geometries in steel or stainless.
